TAMIU Steinway Series Friday, March 12

The Grand Prize winner of the 1980 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition, Gregory Allen, will perform at the upcoming Texas A&M International University Steinway Music Series Friday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The program includes music composed by Frédéric Chopin, Franz Schubert, Olivier Messiaen and Henri Dutilleux.

Allen is currently professor of piano at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has taught since 1973. One of the most sought-after teachers in the country, he is a founding member of the Chamber Soloists of Austin, a group that has toured South America as artistic ambassadors of the U.S. Information Agency, and at the Kennedy Center’s Texas Festival in 1991.

He won the second prize at the 1978 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels and received top honors in the Los Angeles Young Musicians Foundation, the Gina Bachauer, and the Washington International Competitions.

Allen appeared with the New York, Los Angeles, and Israel Philharmonics, as well as orchestras in San Francisco, San Diego, Baltimore, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio and has also appeared in recital at New York’s 92nd St. Y, Washington’s Kennedy Center, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, Pasadena’s Ambassador Auditorium, and Brussels’ Palais des Beaux-Arts.

The TAMIU Steinway Series aims to enrich the Laredo community by offering classical piano music performed by both TAMIU piano faculty and guest pianists from around the world. Because of generous donations from private donors, TAMIU has two beautiful Steinway grand pianos in addition to 14 other Steinway products, making it only one of two universities in Texas to be named an “All Steinway School.”

This is the TAMIU Steinway Series’ fourth season.
