Leading academics and practitioners of emotional intelligence recently participated at the Third Global Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Conference at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, India. Among the experts was Dr. George Potter, assistant professor of educational administration, Texas A&M International University College of Education, department of professional programs.

Dr. Potter delivered one of the keynote speeches and presented his paper topic, “A New Paradigm in Educational Leadership,” at a breakout session.

“Being selected to present at an international conference in Mumbai, India, was a big honor and I was able to develop a network with other presenters from around the world,” said Potter.

The presentation was a summary of ongoing longitudinal research with educational administration graduate students and factors of success and the development of a new model of leadership: emotional intelligence.

Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., author of “Emotional Intelligence,” defined emotional intelligence as how people are being judged, “We’re being judged by a new yardstick: not just by how smart we are, or by our training and expertise, but also by how well we handle ourselves and each other.” (Goleman, 1998, p. 2)

Potter’s research applies emotional intelligence as it is related to educational leadership.

“The participants take an online emotional intelligence assessment and it is statistically analyzed for relatedness to factors of success in educational administration like job appointment to administrative positions, duration of position, student and campus performance,” Potter explained.

His work will be published in a professional journal at a later date.

He received his Ed.D. from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
