TAMIU Sixth Annual International Guitar Concert Sunday, April 25
International music once again fills the Texas A&M International University Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall with the Sixth Annual International Guitar Concert Sunday, April 25 at 4 p.m.
Admission is free and open to the public.
“The International Guitar Concert was born with the objective to perform music and styles from different countries,” said Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, professor of music education/guitar and director of the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble.
“Some of the countries represented in this concert will include the United States, Spain, Italy, México, Germany and England, among others,” Dr. Soto explained.
The program is dedicated to México for the celebration of its bicentennial with the performance of “Huapango,” an orchestral piece written by Mexican composer Jose Pablo Moncayo, and arranged for guitars by Dr. Soto.
Other selections included in the program are “In the Mood,” from the United States, “Concierto de Aranjuez/Largo” from Spain, “Canon in D,” from Germany and “Every Breath You Take” from England, among others.
“The TAMIU Classical Guitar Ensemble is a group of mostly music guitar majors and minors, as well as other instrumentalists who share experience in reading and performing of guitar literature for instrumental ensembles,” said Soto.
Members of the ensemble are Audrey L. Esparza, Joshua D. Orr, Juan M. Peña, Manuel Torres González, Maricela Gonzalez, Marissa Treviño, Jesus Encajada, Jorge García, Ronald Hernandez, Mark Martinez, Marco Lopez, Daniel Arambula and Emmanuel Issac Pruneda. The ensemble is a favorite guest performer at many civic and community events throughout the year.
