Texas A&M International University has selected Fructuoso San Miguel III as its new Police Department chief.

San Miguel replaces outgoing chief Felipe Garza, who has taken a position as chief of Police at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

As University Police chief, San Miguel will be in charge of a full-service Police Department tasked with providing a safe and secure environment for all TAMIU students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Department also enforces University policies as well as local, state and federal regulations.

San Miguel, who was sworn in to his position at a recent swearing in ceremony at TAMIU officiated by University President Dr. Ray Keck, said he is excited about his new duty.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity and I look forward to the challenges of the job,” San Miguel said, “I am happy to be working for such a fine institution of higher learning and I look forward to working with the staff, faculty and students as well as interacting with and learning from everybody.”

Prior to joining TAMIU, San Miguel served as assistant chief of police of the Laredo Police Department, where he was in charge of overseeing the functions of the Administrative and Field Operations. At LPD, he also served as deputy chief and was in charge of various divisions such as Traffic Enforcement, Highway Interdiction and the K-9 Unit. He retired from the LPD in 2009 after 26 years of service.

San Miguel holds both a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from TAMIU. He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) National Academy and has numerous certifications as a peace officer.
