The closure of Laredo’s B. Dalton’s Book Store in Mall del Norte generated considerable concern, and the Texas A&M International University Bookstore hopes three new programs will help to keep local booklovers reading.

“While many people probably only associate a University bookstore with textbooks and required reference books, we also have a large and growing stock of popular books, best-sellers and bargains, “ said Texas A&M International University Bookstore Manager Socorro Calderon.

To that end, the Bookstore, part of the Follett Higher Education Group, has launched three new discount programs that are open to all.

The Bookstore’s “Everyday Bestsellers” program features-newly released bestsellers at 30% discount. The “Bargain Books” program includes a broad and changing selection of books at dramatically reduced prices: yellow ticket books are $3.95 and up, red ticket books $1.98 and up and blue ticket books $1 each.

The Bookstore’s third program is a “Book Club.” Customers purchase 10 general reading books and get a credit for the eleventh. Purchase prices are averaged to determine credit and club cards are provided at no charge. The Book Club program does not apply to textbooks, law and medical school reference books.

TAMIU vice president for finance and administration Juan J. Castillo said the Bookstore’s program offerings are tuned to diverse community’s needs.

“While we’re not a big box book retailer, we do have a diverse inventory tuned to a variety of needs including national, international, local and regional authors. We’ve also recently incorporated books by our TAMIU faculty. These new programs offer additional incentives which should intrigue book lovers of all ages and we welcome them to our campus and Bookstore,” Castillo said.

On Thursday, April 8, the Bookstore will host a book signing by Donald Hendon, author of “365 Powerful Ways to Influence” (Pelican Publishing) from noon to 2 p.m. in front of the Bookstore.

The TAMIU Bookstore is located in the University’s Student Center. Hours are Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. and from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Fridays. It is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
