TAMIU Student Film Festival Screens Monday at TAMIU

Student films produced by members of the Texas A&M International University Communication Program will be showcased in the Spring 2010 “Student Film Festival” Monday, May 10, 2010, from 2-6 p.m. in Student Center room 236.

The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Marcela Moran, assistant professor of Communication, said the films to be screened offer an impressive spectrum of short narrative, documentary and experimental films.

“These are all student-produced efforts created as part of their film production class. We encourage anyone interested in film to be a part of this offering and join us for a chance to dialogue about the films with their creators,” Moran said.

Student filmmakers include Polo Arispe, Gilbert Bañuelos, Alana Benavides, Alejandra Cano, Mike Castro, David De la Garza, Mayra Flores, Ana Gamboa, Agustín Gamez, Yvette García, Tanya Guzman, Perla López, Leisle Martínez, Lizett Montiel, Alejandro Rendon, Ethel González-Zamora, Melissa Santillana Treviño and Alexis Vera.

Among the works to be screened are "Through the Eyes of a Kickapoo," a short documentary that explores a local artist's work and his Native American influences directed by Tayna Guzman.

"Missed Connections," directed by Alana Benavides and Mayra Flores, tells the tale of four lonely hearts searching for “missed connections” using the popular website, Craigslist. The film explores peoples' fixation over finding soul mates through this website after a failed opportunity of confrontation.

David de la Garza directs "Trash," a documentary that seeks the answers to the questions "what is art?" and who "defines what art is"?

Other TAMIU Student Film Festival shorts include documentaries about local DJ’s using unconventional techniques to make music, digital pirating, and homosexuality. Experimental shorts explore the human psyche and gender politics, and incorporate contemporary dance or dance film popular in Europe.
