TAMIU Professional Development Course Focuses on Unified Command

First responders have an opportunity to learn more about the National Incident Management System at the upcoming Texas National Guard professional development course, “Homeland Security, Incident Command and Unified Command,” at Texas A&M International University Friday, June 25 at noon in Dr. F. M. Canseco Hall, room 204.

The free seminar will also be available online.

First responders are highly encouraged to attend. Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education training hours will be awarded to law enforcement that attend.

“This webinar will focus on the history of the Incident Command System and its development through the National Incident Management System in the wake of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001,” explained Dr. Claudia E. San Miguel, director, criminal justice program.

Dr. Willard Oliver, professor, criminal justice, Sam Houston State University, will discuss the makeup of the Incident command and the concepts behind Unified Command. Dr. Oliver’s course will also draw upon lessons learned from the various sectors in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike.

Oliver’s areas of expertise include policing—police stress, small-town and rural policing, community policing, Homeland Security and policing—public policy of crime and criminal justice and the history of criminal justice.

He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in political science from West Virginia University and a M.S. and B.S. in criminal justice from Radford University. He is a retired major in the United States Army Reserves, Military Police Corps, and is a decorated Veteran of the Persian Gulf War.
