Texas A&M International University’s Early Childhood Education students are hosting two camps this summer for children ages 4 -11 from July 19 - Aug. 5.

The Expressive Arts Summer Camps and the Language and Literacy Camps for preschool-kindergarten, elementary, and adolescent will both be offered at the Laredo Public Library on Calton Road.

The Expressive Arts Summer Camps are offered from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, beginning Monday, July 19 -Thursday, Aug. 5.

During each meeting participants will listen to the story of the day and participate in an activity with a particular artistic emphasis. The camp will focus on a variety of multicultural folktales such as “Anansi the Spider: A Tale from Ashanti,” “Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest,” “Lon Po Po: A Red-Riding Hood Story from China,” “The Legend of the Persian Carpet” and “The Mitten: A Ukrainian Folktale.” Artistic emphases include Drama, Arts and Crafts, Music and Dance and Poetry and Writing.

TAMIU undergraduate students who are pre-service teachers will present the Expressive Arts Summer Camps. These camps are designed to engage Early Childhood Education students in activities to become better teachers by interacting with children.

“The camps are designed to be fun,” said Dr. Miki Henderson, TAMIU assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Early Childhood Language and Literacy Camps will take place Tuesday through Thursday, from Tuesday, July 20 - Thursday, Aug. 5, from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.

“The camps are designed to fill the gap between what students learned in the Spring and prepare them for going back to school in the Fall,” said Dr. Henderson.

The camps will be divided into three age groups: Preschool and kindergarten for children ages 4 – 6, Elementary for children ages 7-9, and Adolescent for children ages 10 -12.

The Preschool-kindergarten Language and Literacy Camp will read a different story every meeting and focus daily on a particular concentration.

Stories include “Mister Seahorse,” “If you give a Cat a Cupcake,” “Mean Soup,” “I like Myself,” “Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type,” and “Duck for President.” Students will concentrate on Alphabet Review, Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Writing Letters, Book Experience, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Authoring.

The Elementary and Adolescent Language and Literacy Camps will read one story a week and focus on vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Stories will include “Stone Soup,” “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” “A Chair For My Mother,” “Jumanji,” “The Greatest Story Never Told,” and “You Never Heard of Sandy Koufax.”

Language and Literacy Camps are considered a cross-listed course, taught both by undergraduate and graduate students at TAMIU.

“Graduate students who are teaching will be overseeing and mentoring the undergraduate students,” said Dr. Henderson.

TAMIU Early Childhood Education summer camps are a fun way for children to practice reading, learn new and interesting activities, meet new friends, enjoy games and win prizes.
