TAMIU Welcomes Largest Freshmen Class Ever

Texas A&M International University welcomed its largest freshmen class ever this Fall, 980 students, an increase of 22 percent. Overall, 6,853 students decided to invest in themselves at TAMIU, an increase of 6.8 percent over Fall 2009’s 6,419.

This Fall, semester credit hours, upon which State funding is based, are up 7 percent to 68,001 over last Fall’s 63,317.

“More students have made TAMIU their choice for higher education. We have a state-of-the art campus with a gifted faculty and programs which are richly relevant to our students. We just opened our $25 million University Success Center and U.S. News and World Report ranked TAMIU equal to and higher than other regional universities—public and private,” said Dr. Minita Ramírez, vice president for Student Success.

Dr. Ramírez added that the efforts of the University’s enrollment management group spearheading student recruitment are leading the state.

The University has also pursued an aggressive multi-media marketing campaign, Ramírez said.

“Our staff works tirelessly to be there for students and to help them realize higher education is here for them. Our marketing efforts bring that message into homes daily through bold, integrated and strategic initiatives,” Ramírez said.

This semester at TAMIU, undergraduate students number 5,823 or 84.97 percent, while graduate students number 1,030 or 15.03 percent of students.

The University recently dedicated the $25 million University Success Center that houses essential student services under one roof.

Ramírez provided additional information on the Fall 2010 enrollment:

The College with the highest enrollment is the College of Arts and Sciences with 3,667 students. The most popular undergraduate majors are business administration, nursing, criminal justice, early childhood education and biology.

The most popular graduate majors are business administration, educational administration, school counseling, asst. speech-language pathologist and curriculum and instruction.

HB1 students, qualified local high students enrolled in University-level coursework coordinated by their high school campus and district, number 520.

The overall average student age is 23 with undergraduates averaging 22 and graduates 31. The doctoral student population numbers 33, who average 36 years of age. The University’s youngest student is 11 and the oldest is 64. The student/teacher ratio is 21:1 and undergraduate class sizes average 32 students.

Female students outnumber males 4,076 (59.48 percent) to 2,777 (40.52 percent) and 91.2 percent of students identify themselves as minority, including Hispanic, African-American, Asian, American Indian and Other.

While 96 percent of students are from Texas, almost three percent are foreign. International students from 25 countries enrolled at TAMIU this Fall.

To date, the University has 16,663 alumni around the world.

Registration for Spring 2011 starts Monday, Nov. 1, 2010. Classes start Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011.
