Educational leadership expert, Dr. George R. Potter, recently presented a paper to more than 500 education professionals from 65 countries at the EduLearn 10 – International Conference on Education and new Learning Technologies in Barcelona, Spain.

Dr. Potter, assistant professor of educational administration, Texas A&M International University College of Education, department of professional programs, presented “Utilization of Technology for Assessment, Research, and Training of Educational Leadership Using Emotional Intelligence as a New Paradigm.”

“The paper describes an ongoing research project that utilizes technology to assess online future educational leaders in the areas of emotional intelligence using a published standardized instrument, the Emotional Skills Profile,” explained Potter.

Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., author of “Emotional Intelligence,” defined emotional intelligence as how people are being judged, “We’re being judged by a new yardstick: not just by how smart we are, or by our training and expertise, but also by how well we handle ourselves and each other.” (Goleman, 1998, p. 2)

Potter’s research applies emotional intelligence as it is related to educational leadership.

“The scores of each of the skills of emotional intelligence areas including demographics are captured electronically and used to statistically analyze the data for a qualitative longitudinal study,” he said.

Potter added that the factors of success in the study include: graduate rate, employability in education administration, duration of employment in education administration, student success and campus success as defined by state mandated performance reports.

Last March, Potter delivered one of the keynote speeches at the Third Global Emotional Intelligence Leadership Conference at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, India. He’s preparing to serve on a panel for dissertation in emotional intelligence in India and at the Annual International Emotional Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Potter received his Ed.D. from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
