Keck Called to Washington for National Education Summit
Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) president Dr. Ray Keck has been asked to participate in the National Education Summit and Call to Action next week in Washington, DC.
The two-day event is hosted by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
Invited participants will attend an all-day meeting Monday, Oct. 18 at the Organization of American States with key Education Department and Obama administration leaders.
Tuesday, participants will proceed to the White House for additional meetings focused on a call to action.
Dr. Keck’s invitation to attend the event was extended by Juan Sepúlveda, executive director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
Keck said he was looking forward to an opportunity to be part of a group addressing the importance of higher education, the challenges colleges and universities face and the remarkable success stories that occur daily on campuses like TAMIU.
“Higher education remains the single most important catalyst to personal success. We build and change lives daily. That said, like many institutions across the state and nation, we do have some pressing challenges, some especially unique to border communities, that threaten to reduce access, services and the quality of life of our communities. I’m looking forward to being part of this national conversation,”
Keck said.
For the past 18 months, the Initiative has visited 20 states and more than 90 communities, including a town meeting on the TAMIU campus, to engage citizens concerned with improving the lives of Latinos.
Next week’s meeting is designed to mark the next step in connecting communities nationwide with information, resources and people to improve the academic achievement of Latino students and the lives of Hispanics.
Keck has been president of TAMIU since 2001. Previously, he was a member of the faculty and served as department chair and Provost. He holds an AB and Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literature from Princeton University and has studied at Harvard Divinity School, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Centro de Estudios Hispánicos en Madrid (Bryn Mawr College), and the Deutsche Somerschule am Atlantik.
