The Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the concert stage with the opening of the 31st season – “Connections” – Sunday Oct. 24, 2010, 3 p.m. in the Texas A&M International University Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

“This year’s season is called ‘Connections’ and focuses on bringing together a variety of musical forms and styles that build connections to the community, to each individual piece of music, and to a variety of art forms. We have built a very exciting program of music, as you can see below, opening with the thunderous and impulsive ‘Da-Da-Da- Daaah’ of Beethoven’s fifth symphony, and closing out the year with the Festive Overture of Schostakovich, when we will be joined by more than 100 high school band students from LISD / UISD,” said Brendan Townsend, TAMIU assistant professor of music and director, Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra.

“Our opening program includes soloist Dr. Yu Mei Huang, TAMIU assistant professor of music and strings and concertmaster of the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, – who will bring to life the wonderful tale of the ‘Butterfly Lovers’ – an ancient Chinese love story akin to the tragic story of Romeo & Juliet. Hear the magic of this wonderfully engaging work by clicking the link below,” Townsend said.

He added that also featured on this program will be well-known Laredo dance and castanet instructor Alta Gracia García and her former students who will perform both during intermission and with the orchestra in the famous “La Boda de Luis Alonso.”
