Candidates for the City of Laredo mayoral seat will participate in a debate hosted by Texas A&M International University’s Political Science Association (PSA) and Student Government Association (SGA) Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the University’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Candidates scheduled to participate in the debate are incumbent Raul Salinas, Gene Belmares, José Valdéz, Juan Ramírez, and James Noel Newland.

Dr. James Norris, associate professor of political science and PSA faculty advisor, said TAMIU students will host the debate in order to bring student and community awareness to the 2010 mayoral election.

“In the local government races, including the mayoral race, people have very little information about candidates,” said Dr. Norris, “The purpose of the debate is to give students and the community an opportunity to get to know the candidates and their platforms.”

Moderated by PSA President George Aguilar, the debate will feature a mixed-format. It will include questions gathered from students, faculty and audience members, said Carlos Cortez, SGA vice president. The debate will also feature one round of questions where each candidate asks one question of another candidate of their choice, he added.

Doors will open at 6 p.m.

For more information, please contact Aguilar at 326.2265 or visit SGA offices at Student Center 224.

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
