Steinway Series Returns With Internationally Acclaimed An

Internationally acclaimed and prize-winning pianist Ning An begins the Texas A&M International University Fall 2010 Steinway Series Sunday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public.

An’s program includes music by J.S. Bach, Frederic Chopin and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

An will also conduct a master class Saturday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. – noon. Students will take turns playing selected piano pieces and then receive feedback from An.

The master class is free and open to the public.

Hailed as a musician who “combines a flawless technique and mystery of the instrument with an expressive power that is fueled by profound and insightful understanding” by the New York Concert Review.

At 16, An made his orchestral debut with the Cleveland Orchestra. He has been a featured soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Stuttgart Philharmonic, Tivoli Symphony Orchestra, Belgian National Symphony, Flemish Radio Symphony, Beijing Symphony Orchestra and the Taipei Symphony Orchestra. He was also a featured soloist on the 100th Anniversary American Tour made by the Warsaw Philharmonic.

An won top prizes at the Queen Elizabeth, Cleveland and William Kapell piano competitions. Those wins led to performances at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, Salle Verdi in Milan and the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, as well as numerous festivals all over the world.

He started his musical studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Olga Radosavljevich and Sergei Babayan and continued his studies under the tutelage of Russell Sherman at the New England Conservatory of Music. Since 2005, he has served as artist in residence at Lee University in Tennessee.

The TAMIU Steinway Series aims to enrich the Laredo community by offering classical piano music performed by both TAMIU piano faculty and guest pianists from around the world. Because of generous donations from private donors, TAMIU has two beautiful Steinway grand pianos in addition to 14 other Steinway products, making it only one of two universities in Texas to be named an “All Steinway School.”

This is the TAMIU Steinway Series’ fifth season.
