Registration Continues for TAMIU SWTP Conference
Registration for the annual South Texas Writing Project (STWP) Fall Conference, “Biliteracy Teaching through Mexican-American Voices” is now underway.
The Conference is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Texas A&M International University's Western Hemispheric Trade Center.
Early registration is $75 and is underway through Friday, Oct. 29. Late registration, which runs from Monday, Nov. 1 – Friday, Nov. 12, is $100.
Registration for STWP teacher consultants, TAMIU students and faculty is $25.

“The Fall Conference, a staple of the South Texas Writing Project yearly events since 1998, is geared for all K-12 teachers, college and university faculty and private school sectors," said Dr. Bernice Sánchez-Pérez.
“This year’s keynote speaker is Diana López, author of the adult novella, ‘Sofia’s Saints’ and middle grade novel ‘Confetti Girl,’ ”added Dr. Sánchez-Pérez.
López teaches English at the University of Houston in Victoria, Texas, and has more than 15 years of teaching middle school and at the college level, leading creative writing workshops, making presentations at conferences and readings and holding workshops for teachers.
She was featured in “Hecho in Tejas,” an anthology of writing by Texas-Mexicans (University of New Mexico Press, 2007). Her short stories appeared in the “Chicago Quarterly Review,” “Sycamore Review,” and “New Texas Journal.”
She was featured on National Public Radio’s Latino USA and won the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Award, sponsored by Sandra Cisneros.
In addition to López, participants can expect six hours of professional development hours (CPU credits), “Confetti Girl” and lesson plan activities, immersion theater at the TAMIU Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium, keynote speaker hands-on workshops for elementary and secondary levels, and a variety of teacher workshops for elementary and secondary levels.
