Often relegated to fading memories and pictures, Laredo’s veterans found themselves the subject of a special salute at Texas A&M International University Monday, Nov. 8.

TAMIU President Dr. Ray Keck and University administrators, staff and students welcomed members of the local veterans community to the 2010 Veterans Appreciation Breakfast. Colors were presented by the TAMIU Army ROTC Honor Guard.

Dr. Keck welcomed the group and was followed by keynote speaker David Leyendecker, Korean War Veteran and US Marine Corps (USMC) member. Vietnam veterans were recognized by Gabriel López of the South Texas Afghanistan Iraq Veterans Association.

U.S. Border Patrol Agent John Letney provided bagpipe accompaniment.

Also on hand was Vietnam Dog Handlers Association President Fred Dorr. Later that day Dorr presented the award-winning documentary “War Dogs: America’s Forgotten Heroes” in a special showing at the Student Center for students and community members.

This is the third year the event has been held at TAMIU.

The University has designated an on-campus Veterans contact in the Office of the University Registrar at 326.2254, located in University Success Center room 121.

TAMIU has also dedicated a website with resources to assist vets at tamiu.edu/affairs/registrar/veterans
