Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) officials are encouraging students to attend student-fee hearings to learn about proposed fee changes for the 2011-12 school year

Hearings are scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 17 at noon in the Student Center rotunda; Thursday, Nov. 18 at noon in the SC Rotunda and Monday, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. in the SC Rotunda.

Proposed fees include the replacement of an existing student deposit fee with an endowed scholarship fee and an athletics fee increase to make athletics self-sustaining. Voting for the fees is scheduled Nov. 30-Dec. 2 online.

The Endowment Student Scholarship replaces a $10 student deposit fee and funds scholarships for students. It replaces the fee with a $10 per semester Endowment Scholarship Fee. Each year graduating students are encouraged by Alumni Relations to donate their $10 deposit for student scholarships, and the great majority of graduates do.

Since most of these students are at the end of their academic career, they are not eligible to benefit from the scholarships. The Endowment Scholarship Fee, in contrast, would begin paying out scholarships beginning the semester after it is first collected, giving current students an opportunity to benefit. A portion of the funds will be earmarked for students wishing to study abroad.

The Athletics Fee/Academics Reallocation increases the Athletics Fee by $10 per semester credit hour to make TAMIU Athletics self-sustaining. This frees more than $1,000,000 currently used to supplement the program, making these funds available for academic instruction.

These funds could be used for anything from additional faculty to new equipment for labs or other instructional materials. At this time, the intent is to use the fee for current operational needs of the Athletics Program, including uniforms, equipment, and travel. In the future, the fee could be used for the addition of other sports.

After the hearings have concluded, currently enrolled students will cast their votes online beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, concluding at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2. If the fees are passed, they would begin Fall 2011.
