TAMIU Professor Collaborating on National Survey of Hispanic Journalists

Texas A&M International University assistant professor Dr. María de los Angeles Flores will be a main collaborator on a national study that seeks to determine the state of Latino journalists. 

The study is made possible through a partnership between the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) and the Center for the Study of Latino Media and Markets at the Texas State University-San Marcos School of Journalism and Mass Communications, according to Iván Román, NAHJ executive director.

Dr. Flores will collaborate with principal investigator Dr. Federico Subervi, professor and director of the Center. Dr. Subervi has been conducting research, publishing and teaching on a broad range of issues related to the mass media and ethnic minorities, especially Latinos in the United States, since the
early 1980s.

Flores said the study should substantially benefit Latino journalists.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have current statistics that indicate fundamental information about the nation’s Latino journalists, including their current professional and future training and education needs. This study should help us to better quantify the field of Latino journalists, and enable us to better project and prepare for their growth and development as professional journalists, Flores explained.

The online bilingual study is directed to Latino journalists who work for Latino-oriented media, general market media, or as freelancers or independent journalists and all journalists, regardless of ethnicity, working in Latino-oriented media.  The survey link is available at survey.education.txstate.edu.

Flores joined TAMIU’s College of Arts and Sciences, department of Language and Literature in 2009.  She holds her Ph.D. in Journalism from the University of Texas-Austin and advises the University’s student newspaper, “The Bridge.”
