The Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra will be “Singing the Blues” for its next concert on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m.  at Laredo Community College’s Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center.

Music director and conductor Brendand Townsend said the concert cleverly juxtapositions two diverse genres: orchestral jazz and opera.

The program will include  Gershwin’s immortal “Rhapsody in Blue,” which broke all the rules in its drive to bring the all-American sound creation, jazz,  to the concert stage. Written in 1924 for the Paul Whitman Orchestra with Gershwin on the piano, the work has become so popular that it was included in Disney’s “Fantasia 2000.” Dr. Mary Grace Carroll will join the  LPO to perform this iconic American standard.

Also on the program is Donizetti’s delightful one-act opera “Rita,”  the story of a bullying wife, fallen lovers, and double crossing schemes. Suzanne Ramo, Eric Schmidt and Joe Crabtree join the Orchestra to tell the passion-filled story.

“Singing the Blues” is dedicated to honoring the men and women of law enforcement, and all law enforcement professionals are invited to attend the concert for free (by showing their badge at the door)
