TAMIU Steinway Series Presents Pianist Nel Sunday

Bringing with him nearly four decades of concertizing experience, Dr. Anton Nel is the next artist featured for the Texas A&M International University Steinway Series Sunday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public.

A reception will follow after the recital.

The program includes music by Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach, Frederic Chopin, Ludwig van Beethoven, Claude Debussy and Franz Liszt.

Following an auspicious debut with Beethoven’s C Major Concert after only two years of study when he was 12 years old, the Johannesburg native captured first prizes in all the major South African competitions while still in his teens. Dr. Nel toured extensively and became a well-known radio and television personality.

He made his European debut in France in 1982, the same year he graduated with highest distinction from the University of the Witwatersand in Johannesburg. Nel came to the U.S. in 1983 and received his master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Cincinnati.

Nel, a top prizewinner and recipient of numerous awards, is currently the holder of the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Endowed Chair in Piano at the University of Texas at Austin. He was at UT when he was in his 20s and returned after professorships at the Eastman School of Music and the University Michigan, where he was chairman of the piano department.

The TAMIU Steinway Series aims to enrich the Laredo community by offering classical piano music performed by both TAMIU piano faculty and guest pianists from around the world. Because of generous donations from private donors, TAMIU has two beautiful Steinway grand pianos in addition to 14 other Steinway products, making it only one of two universities in Texas to be named an “All Steinway School.”

This is the TAMIU Steinway Series’ fifth season.
