In official figures reported to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Texas A&M International University will post a record Spring 2011 enrollment of 6,544 students, a 7.49% increase over last Spring, and a 8.45% increase in Semester Credit Hours (SCH) to 65,869. This marks the highest spring TAMIU enrollment to date.

Last Spring’s enrollment was 6,088 and SCH, upon which State funding is based, totaled 60,735.

Dr. Ray Keck, TAMIU president, noted that the increases are especially significant in today’s challenging economic environment.

“It’s clear that the University is part of a national dynamic that sees people of all ages turn to universities to prepare themselves for careers, career changes or earn advanced degrees as part of a critical investment in themselves,” Dr. Keck said.

He noted that the University’s growth also comes at a time when all State universities and colleges face substantial budget cuts in light of the State’s economic  shortfall.

“It is an odd victory:  our record growth indicates that we are delivering on our mission of higher education here, but we will certainly have to do so with reduced resources in the future. That said, we are optimistic that our State’s leadership will recognize TAMIU’s strengths and accomplishments and we’re confident that they will continue to champion our University,” Keck explained.

TAMIU’s Spring Semester 2011 enrollment includes 56% (3,696) full-time undergraduate or graduate students, while 44% (2,848)  of students are part-time.

The highest enrollment is in the College of Arts and Sciences with 3,435 students (52%). The College of Education with 1,581 students (24%) follows, with the A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business having 1,067 students (16.3%), and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences 461 (7%).

The most popular undergraduate majors are business administration, nursing, criminal justice, biology and early childhood education. The most popular graduate programs are business administration, educational administration, school counseling, counseling psychology and special education. Of graduate students, 62% hold undergraduate degrees from TAMIU.

The average undergraduate student age is 22 and 31  for graduate students. The youngest student is 14 while the oldest is 64. Females outnumber males 60% (3,995) to 40% (2,589). Average undergraduate class size is 32 and TAMIU’s student-faculty ratio is 21 to 1.

Minority enrollment is 92% Hispanic,  .76% Black and .63% Asian. 96.3 percent of TAMIU students are In-State residents, but almost 3% of the University's combined undergraduate and graduate enrollment is international. This Spring, 30 different countries are represented in the University’s total enrollment.
