Texas A&M International University’s Third Annual “The Big Event,” a day-long student volunteer day, will take place Saturday, March 26, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Slaughter Park, located at 200 N. Stone.

The initiative, the largest TAMIU student volunteer effort of the year, is hosted by TAMIU’s Student Government Association (SGA) in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, the City of Laredo and Keep Laredo Beautiful.

“The Big Event” is coordinated through SGA’s Leaders Organizing Volunteer Events (LOVE) Committee, and is dedicated to making a community impact through student volunteerism focused on beautifying Laredo. Now celebrating its third year, “The Big Event” has coordinated the service of over 300 student volunteers for the previous two years. Organizers hope to exceed that number this year.

Jerry Perez Jr., SGA senator-at-large and LOVE Committee chair, said “The Big Event” has an expansive vision of community service.

“Our mission is to provide, participate in and evaluate a well-coordinated, high- quality and comprehensive system of community-based volunteer events organized by TAMIU students with the overall goal of enhancing the quality of life of all residents in Laredo and Webb County. ‘The Big Event’ affords hundreds of TAMIU students with an opportunity to make an impact on our community: one piece of litter removed, one hole dug, one tree planted,” Perez explained.

Participation in The Big Event is open to any TAMIU student, faculty, or staff member.
