Have you ever wondered what it feels like to Zumba? If you’ve answered ‘yes,’ then you are invited to Party Hearty, a charity event bringing awareness to women and heart disease Monday, April 11, from 7 – 9 p.m. at Texas A&M International University’s Kinesiology, Wellness and Recreation Center (KWRC).

Entrance to Party Hearty Zumbathon Charity Event is $5 and will benefit the American Heart Association’s “Go Red Por Tu Corazón” movement. The event is open to everyone in the community and people ages 18 and up.

According to the American Heart Association, one in three women die from heart disease, almost one every minute, making heart disease the No. 1 killer of women, with Hispanic women being at an even higher risk.

Zumba, a fitness dance class infused with Latin and international rhythms,  will help bring awareness to this devastating disease and empower women to live a heart-healthy life, said Denise Schuster, TAMIU’s associate director of Fitness and Wellness.

Participants do not need to have prior dance experience and are encouraged to wear comfortable, modest workout clothes and bring shoes with low traction such as those used for dance or basketball, Schuster said.

“Each routine varies from easy to difficult and each part is broken down so that anyone who can’t dance can,” Schuster said.

Featured Zumba rhythms include cumbia, reggaeton, salsa, merengue, samba, bachata, hip-hop, and bellydance.

For more information, please contact Schuster at 326.3017, e-mail dschuster@tamiu.edu or visit offices located in KWRC 222.

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
