TAMIU Seventh Annual International Guitar Concert May 5

International music once again fills the Texas A&M International University Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall with the Seventh Annual International Guitar Concert Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m.


Admission is free and open to the public.

“The International Guitar Concert was born several years with the objective to expose our students to opportunities to perform music and styles from different countries, and we are very excited to have a program in which all of our selections will be premiered at this concert,” said Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, professor of music education/guitar and director of the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble.

“This year, the countries we have selected for this program are Spain, England, México, Cuba and the United States, with special guitar arrangements of music from many genres and generations,” Dr. Soto explained.

Members of the ensemble for the 2011 spring semester are Audrey L. Esparza, Juan M. Peña, Manuel Torres González, Maricela González, Marissa Treviño, Mark Martínez, Fernando Hernández, Stephanie Solís, Joaquín Domínguez González, Rebecca Gutiérrez, Carlos Limón, Jennifer Navarro, Alejandro Peña, Leonel Salinas, José Guerra, Marco López, and Emmanuel Pruneda.

Some of the selections included in the program are “Asturias,” by Issac Albeniz, representing Spain, “Let it Be” by John Lennon and Paul McCartney,” representing England, “Sobre las Olas” by Juventino Rosas and “Debo Hacerlo” by Juan Gabriel, representing México, “Guantanamera” by Fernandez Diaz, Cuba, “Classical Gas” by Mason Williams and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” by Ennio Morricone, representing the United States, among others.

“The TAMIU Classical Guitar Ensemble is a group of mostly music guitar majors and minors, as well as other instrumentalists who share experience in reading and performing guitar literature for instrumental ensembles. Our ensemble is a very active guest performer during the school year at special community and University events,” said Soto.
