TAMIU Jazz Festival features Local Schools April 19

Listen to some of the best jazz musicians in the area at the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Second Annual Jazz Festival Tuesday, April 19 starting at 4 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Five local school groups will perform between 4 and 6 p.m. and lead up to the performance of the TAMIU Jazz Big Band, Dr. David M. García, director, at 7:30 p.m.

Harmony Science Academy, Jesús Vázques, director, will perform at 4 p.m.

The Vidal M. Treviño Guitar Combo, Ric Cortez, director, will perform at 4:30 p.m.

The United High School Vocal Jazz, Paul Foster, director, will perform at 5 p.m.

United South High School, Rafael Morales, director, will perform at 5:30 p.m.

The Cigarroa High School Jazz Ensemble, Jesús Regalado, director, will perform at 6 p.m.

Guest clinician and soloist with the TAMIU Band will be Airman First Class Kenneth Jones, solo trumpet player with the USAF Band of the West “Dimensions in Blue” Jazz Band.

Jones, recipient of National Defense Service Medal, joined the Air National Guard Band of the Northeast in 2005 while completing his bachelor's in jazz performance at the New England Conservatory of Music.

While at the New England Conservatory of Music, Jones studied with John McNeil, Jerry Bergonzi, and Hankus Netsky. He also studied with Charles Schlueter, former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

An active freelancer in the Boston area, Jones has performed with the Cape Cod, Plymouth, Thayer, and Lexington Symphonies, and has performed with John Faddis, Herb Pomeroy, and Bob Moses.

Also featured with the TAMIU Band is Suzanne Ramo, who will be performing “Cry Me A River.”

The TAMIU Symphonic Wind Ensemble will hold its Spring Band Concert Tuesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
