Texas A&M International University’s Office of Student Affairs director, Gerardo Alva, has been selected to serve as the Texas State Representative for the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA).

Formed in 1986 and formerly known as the Association for the Student Judicial Affairs, ASCA is the leading professional organization for student conduct administrators.

“I am excited to represent TAMIU, the State, and ASCA. I am thankful for the opportunity to take on this new challenge,” Alva said.

As a state representative for ASCA, Alva will collaborate with colleagues to facilitate events within the region. He hopes to garner additional knowledge on state laws impacting conduct practice as well as on alcohol abuse and sexual assaults on university campuses.

The ASCA was founded on the principles of developing and enforcing standards of conduct and resolution of conflict for students in an educational facility that advances students’ personal and social development. Students assume a significant role in developing and enforcing of such regulations in order to be better prepared for the responsibilities of citizenship.

These standards of conduct form the basis for all behavioral expectations in an academic community. The enforced standards must protect the rights, health and safety of the community members to pursue their educational goals without unnecessary interference.

Among the most important characteristics are integrity, wisdom, and empathy; all necessary for the administration of student conduct standards.
