Rogelio Rodriguez Workshop, Performance This Weekend

Spirited flamenco dancers will return to Texas A&M International University for the three day 2011 Rogelio Rodríguez Flamenco Workshop that leads up to “Noche Flamenca” Saturday, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre.

Admission is $5 for “Noche Flamenca.”

Registration is currently underway for the Flamenco Workshop scheduled for Friday, June 10 – Sunday, June 12. It is open to all dancers ages 13 and older. Two sections will be offered: beginner/intermediate and advanced.

Featured instructors are Marc Aurelio, artistic director for the Piramide Dance Studio in Rome, Italy, and Susan Silas, former senior member of the Rodriguez Flamenco Company.

Aurelio appeared as a dancer in “La Cage Aux Folles” and “Cabaret” and served as assistant director to Saverio Marconi for “Nine,” which was staged at the famous Folies Bergeres theater in Paris, France.

He will lead the advanced group through a bolero flamenco.

Silas will teach the beginner/intermediate group ben amor. A computer whiz by trade, she is a flamenco aficionado by heart and teaches flamenco and tap in Houston.

Workshop cost is by donation. The minimum suggested amount for the three days is $25 and contributions go to towards the $19,000 needed to establish the Rogelio Rodríguez Endowed Memorial Scholarship.
