Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Binational Center will present a benefit performance of “Mi Novia La Tristeza: The Life and Music of Agustín Lara,” on Friday, Oct. 28 at the TAMIU Student Center Ballroom at 7 p.m.

The production features live piano music and Spanish language conversations with Mexican authors Guadalupe Loaeza and Pável Granados about the famed Mexican composer.  Audience members will have an opportunity to interact  and listen to the most memorable anecdotes of Lara’s life, music, movies, and women. The evening benefits the Binational Scholarship Fund for Nuevo Laredo students.  Tickets are $50, $75 and $100 and include hors d’oeuvres and wine bar.

Loaeza is a popular journalist and author of a number of books that observe the irony of Mexican society and include “Las Ninas Bien,” “Las Reinas de Polanco,” “El ABC de los mexicanos, “Compro Lluego Existo and “Los de Arriba,” among others.

Granados, also a journalist and published author, focuses on literature and popular culture for many Mexico magazines and cultural supplements and has published an acclaimed anthology on the poet Salvador Diaz Mirón.  He has also served on the faculty of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

The much revered Mexican singer and songwriter Lara was born in Tlacotalpan, Veracuz and became the nation’s top songman with  hits like “Solamente Una Vez,” “Tropicana,” “Granada” and 700 other compositions.  He was especially well known in Spain where he was given a house in Granada by a grateful Spaniard impressed by his tunes about Spain.

Lara’s ability to craft songs that could dominate world music charts led to his being called “El Flaco de Oro” (The Thin Man of Gold). A great many of his songs have since become standards, recorded by artists worldwide, including Nat King Cole, Vicente Fernández, Pedro Infante, Marlene Dietrich, Lucía Méndez and many more. He died in Mexico City on Nov. 6, 1970.
