Laredo Theater Guild International (LTGI) opens its third season with the late Larry Shue’s classic comedy “The Foreigner,” about cultural differences, inner courage, and racism, with mistaken identity thrown in for good measure and great comedy.

“The Foreigner” opens Wednesday, October 19 at Texas A&M International University’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ Theatre and runs through Sunday, October 23 with performance times from Wednesday through Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and matinees Saturday and Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students with Valid ID and for Senior Citizens. They are available for advance purchase at Foster's located at 1202 Del Mar Boulevard, Suite 101; Blue Top located at 101 Hillside Road #11, as well as at the box office prior to each show. Directed by TAMIU theatre arts instructor Gil Martínez and produced by Linda L. Howland, “The Foreigner” is a two-time Obie Award winner and Outer Critics Circle Award winner for Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production.

The cast features José Flores in the title role, and features John Maxstadt, Kelly B. Fitzgerald, Karol A. Batey, Marco González, Adalberto Chavarría, and Patrick Carroll, along with Alejandro Mejia, Kenneth Duncan, Jr., and Alfonso Galván.

“This is a great cast, with the unique distinction of having theater arts and UIL directors José Flores and Karol Batey, from Nixon and Martin High Schools respectively, in principle roles. As is common in our shows, the cast is rounded out with high school and college students, alongside other members of the community,” said producer Howland.

The play is set in a fishing lodge in rural Georgia where the title character pretends to be a foreigner from an exotic country who does not understand a word of English. In doing so, he propels the non-stop hilarity of the play forward, leading to the outrageously funny climax in which good triumphs over evil.

“I love stories about the unlikely hero finding inner courage. (This play) is one of the best modern farces, and loads of fun for the whole family!,” said director Gil Martínez.

Other LTGI shows currently planned are Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” opening February 2, 2012 and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” in July 2012, followed by “The Heiress,” opening October 2012.
