TAMIU’s Spring Enrollment Holding Steady
In official figures reported to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Texas A&M International University is posting a Spring 2012 enrollment of 6,533 students. Last Spring’s enrollment was 6,544. Spring 2012 Semester Credit Hours are 65,806. Last Spring’s SCH was 65,856.
Dr. Ray Keck, TAMIU president, noted that the University’s enrollment is holding steady, especially significant in today’s challenging economic environment.
“The national focus on people of all ages turning to universities to prepare themselves for careers or retool themselves for changing careers continues -- but is occurring during our nation’s most challenging economic times. Our enrollment is holding steady, but we know that students are affected by the constraints of our times,” Dr. Keck said.
He noted that last year’s State-wide reductions in higher education funding has also reduced resources, but he is optimistic about the future. TAMIU saw an 18 percent budget reduction in 2011.
“While we will certainly have to do so with reduced resources, we are optimistic that our State’s leadership will recognize TAMIU’s strengths and accomplishments and confident that they will continue to realize the transformative importance of higher education here and throughout our State,” Keck explained.
TAMIU’s Spring Semester 2012 enrollment includes 56% (3,677) full-time undergraduate or graduate students, while 43% (2,856) of students are part-time.
The highest enrollment is in the College of Arts and Sciences with 3,571 students (55%). The College of Education with 1,458 students (22%) follows, with the A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business having 1,056 students (16%), and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences 448 (7%).
The most popular undergraduate majors are business administration, criminal justice, nursing, biology and communication disorders.
The top graduate majors are business administration, educational administration, counseling psychology, school counseling and accounting. Of graduate students, 64% hold undergraduate degrees from TAMIU.
The average undergraduate student age is 22 and 31 for graduate students. The youngest student is 13 while the oldest is 65. Females outnumber males 60% (3,913) to 40% (2,620). Average undergraduate class size is 32 and TAMIU’s student-faculty ratio is 22 to 1.
Minority enrollment is 92% Hispanic, .75% Black and .64% Asian. 96 percent of TAMIU students are In-State residents, but 2.6% of the University's combined undergraduate and graduate enrollment is international. This Spring, 169 international students represent 25 different countries.
Online registration for the University’s Maymester, Summer Sessions and Fall 2012 begins April 2 via UOnline at tamiu.edu. Maymester begins May 14. Summer Session I classes start June 4. Summer Session II and III classes begin July 9. The Fall Semester 2012 begins Aug. 23.
