This Saturday, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students will roll up their sleeves and flex some muscle for “The Big Event,” the University’s annual TAMIU day of service.

Students will gather Saturday, March 24 at 9 a.m. at Eistetter Park, 4301 San Francisco where they will focus on a neighborhood clean-up. Transportation will be provided from TAMIU to the event site beginning at 7:30 a.m. from the Student Center Rotunda.

This is the fourth year that students make a difference and serve their community through “The Big Event.”

TAMIU associate director of Student Affairs Mayra Hernández said that The Big Event helps to inspire current and former Dustdevils.

“At The Big Event, we gather to establish a community of respect, integrity, excellence and service. In the short time that we’ve offered the program, we’ve involved almost a thousand students in thousands of hours of service to the community,” Hernández explained.

Past Big Events have seen students build and repair houses, clean city parks, feed the hungry, and more.

Organizers took their inspiration from Texas A&M University in College Station, the home of The Big Event.

The TAMIU Big Event also helps forge a spirit of continued service, Hernández noted.

“While this is one day that we share our service with a precision focus, it really becomes part of a larger vision of service that our students will carry forward throughout the year and, we believe, for the rest of their lives,” Hernández concluded.

On Wednesday, Webb County Judge Danny Valdez visited students on campus and issued a proclamation declaring Saturday, March 24 as "TAMIU Big Event Day."
