An impressive collaboration by the Texas A&M International University Chamber Singers, Laredo Community College Mixed Choir and the Chamber Orchestra of Laredo (C.O.O.L.) will present a free concert Wednesday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ (CFPA) Recital Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The first half of the concert features the combined forces of the TAMIU Chamber Singers and the LCC Mixed Choir under the direction of Dana Crabtree and Dr. Joseph Crabtree in a program of love songs and folk music.

Featured works include the Brahms Liebeslieder Walzer, Thomas Morley’s well-loved madrigal My Bonny Lass She Smileth, P.D.Q. Bach’s parody My Bonny Lass She Smelleth, and stunning a cappella arrangements of Sting’s Fields of Gold, the Scottish classic Loch Lomond, and the beloved Venezuelan Alma Llanera.

The choir will be joined by special guest pianists Martha Saywell and Dr. Mary Grace Carroll for Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer. Many maintain these love songs by Brahms are filled with his richest and most flowing melodies.

The concert’s second half features C.O.O.L under the direction of maestro Brendan Townsend.  The ensemble, including students from TAMIU and area high schools, will play Bizet’s Symphony in C Major. Written before Bizet scored his major success with the opera Carmen, it pays tribute to the classical period in its structure, but provides rich romantic melodies, particularly in the Second Movement.

For additional information, contact Townsend at btownsend@tamiu.edu, call 326.3039 or visit offices in CFPA, room 216.
