Celebrate spring beginnings with an abundance of color at the upcoming Holi – Festival of Colors at Texas A&M International University Thursday, March 8 from 3 – 7 p.m. on the University Success Center "Quad."

This event is free and open to the public.

“Holi is a Hindu celebration, also known as the festival of colors. It is part religious, but primarily celebrates the spring beginnings,” explained Jannet García, TAMIU associate director, international education.

During the festival, participants splash each other in vibrant colored powder or colored water.

The celebration dates back to many Hindu legends associated with the triumph of good over evil. It also gives many people a chance to play and dance.

“It’s open to the public and the Indian community in Laredo as well, but we do recommend people wear old clothing because the coloring will be difficult to remove,” advised Garcia.

The event is one of many cultural awareness events co-sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs and the Association of International Students.

It is the first time this event is held on campus.

For more information, contact Garcia at jannetg@tamiu.edu, 326.2566 or visit offices in Student Center 224B.

University office hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
