TAMIU Students Recognized for Volunteer Service by Time Warner

Student members of the Texas A&M International University chapter of the Practicing, Innovation, Research and Academics Through Engineering Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (PIRATE SHPE) were honored with an Appreciation Luncheon Feb. 21 at TAMIU.

TAMIU’s Binational Center - Continuing Education and Time Warner Cable hosted the luncheon.  TAMIU engineering professors, local engineers, continuing education staff and Time Warner Cable executives Mike Perez, director of Technical Operations in Laredo and Melba R. Harris, communications manager in San Antonio, accompanied the students.  

The luncheon recognized PIRATE SHPE for their invaluable volunteer service during the recent First Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Competition at TAMIU, sponsored by Time Warner, said TAMIU Continuing Education director Kimberly Martin del Campo.

“These students are great leaders, caring and understanding. They help us provide engineering educational experiences for all of our high schools,” Martin del Campo said.

Harris represented Time Warner’s “Connect A Million Minds” project, a philanthropic initiative to address American’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

She said TAMIU’s PIRATE SHPE efforts at the FTC were a powerful example of  “Connect A Million Minds.”

“The PIRATE SHPE student group is a prime example of what it means to ‘Connect A Million Minds’ by helping in every aspect of the recently held FTC Tournament held at TAMIU,” Harris explained.
