8th Annual Guitar Concert at TAMIU April 26

Music from England, Spain, México and the United Sates, and from other parts of the world will take audiences on a music journey at the 8th Annual International Guitar Concert at Texas A&M International University Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall Thursday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free and open to the public.

“The International Guitar Concert was born several years ago with the objective to perform music and styles from different countries,” said Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, professor of music education/guitar and director, TAMIU Guitar Ensemble.

“This year, my students and I have selected to perform music from a variety of countries, genres and styles, and we are honored to have The TAMIU Chamber Music Ensemble as our special guests,” Dr. Soto explained.

The program will include selections in which for the first time the unique sounds of the Guitar Ensemble and the Chamber Music Ensemble will join musical forces.

Dr. Susan Berdahl, associate professor of music, is director for the Chamber Music Ensemble.

Selections included in the program range from the traditional sounds of flamenco music to the beautiful contemporary guitar arrangements.

Representing Spain, the Guitar Ensemble will perform “Ritmos de Fandango.” From England, the Ensemble will perform very special and unique instrumental arrangements of Adele’s “Someone Like You” and the Beatles “Hey Jude.” From Italy, the Ensemble will perform all movements of the famous Concerto in G Major by Antonio Vivaldi. From Mexico, “Historia de un Amor” has been chosen to represent this country.

The program also includes a special treat for the audience — the TAMIU Chamber Music Ensemble will perform along with the Guitar Ensemble traditional music from Perú and Cuba, plus the famous “Huapango” by José Pablo Moncayo, from México.

“The TAMIU Classical Guitar Ensemble is a performing class composed of mostly music guitar majors and minors, as well as other instrumentalists from other majors, who share experience in reading and performing of guitar literature for instrumental ensembles,” said Soto.

Members of the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble during the 2012 spring semester include Eddie Áviles, Robert Batey, Alejandro Peña, Audrey L. Esparza, Leonel Salinas, Mark Martínez, Carlos Morales, José Sánchez, Roberto Coronado, Carlos Limón, Miguel Ruiz, Jennifer Navarro, Valeria Éscobar, Marisela González, and Marco L. López.

Members of the TAMIU Chamber Music Ensemble include Víctor Vedia, Amelia Amaya, Amanda Rodríguez, Benito Rangel, Enrique Álvarez, Armando Elizondo, Noé Benavides, Ricardo Garza, Raymond Martínez, Chris de la Cruz and Ricardo Hoguin

These Ensembles are favorite guest performers at many civic and community events throughout the year.
