TAMIU Student, Competition Winner to Perform at LPO Season Finale

A Texas A&M International University(TAMIU) student will help the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra’s Sight & Sound Season coms to a close Sunday, April 22 at 3 p.m. at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Joining the LPO for the first time as soloist will be Melisa Trevino, a junior at TAMIU, and winner of the Third Annual Laredo Concerto Competition.

Trevino began her violin playing at Lamar Middle School with instructor Bea Balli and later attended Nixon High School and the Vidal M. Treviño School of Fine Arts and Communications where continued her violin studies with Bob Compton.

She is currently a student of Dr. Yu-Mei Huang, TAMIU assistant professor of upper strings, and concertmaster for the Chamber Orchestra of Laredo.

Melissa will perform the 2nd Violin Concerto by the Polish composer Henri Wieniawski.

“Performing as a soloist is once in a lifetime opportunity for many young musicians,” said Brendan Townsend, director, LPO.

“Meli is a most diligent student. She works incredibly hard and her winning is an example to all that it pays to practice,” praised Dr. Huang.

The Third Annual Concerto Competition is underwritten by the D.D. Hachar Charitable Trust Fund as part of the educational outreach support grant awarded to the Laredo Philharmonic.

A total of 10 students took part in the competition in which they performed a complete work for soloist and orchestra.

Also on the program will be the “Swan Lake” Suite of Tchaikovsky, “Jupiter Borealis” by Heather Schmidt, and the “Star Wars” Suite that won John Williams his first Oscar.

“This season the LPO has been building its audience by treating them with music familiar to everyone from film, TV, Broadway shows and cartoons,” said Townsend.

“The orchestra has had four very successful concerts and is in the midst of planning on building on that as we prepare to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the collaboration between TAMIU and LCC,” revealed Townsend.

Of note, the upcoming season will also be the tenth season under the baton of Maestro Townsend.
