TAMIU Student Joins LPO in Concert Sunday

Melissa Treviño, violin, will be the featured soloist with the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday April 22, 2012 having won the 3rd Annual Concerto Competition.

The concert begins at 3:00 p.m. at Texas A&M International University’s Center for Fine & Performing Arts Recital Hall. Tickets, which will be available at the door,cost $15 for adults and $12 for Seniors. Students will receive free admission.

Also on the program for the concert titled “Black Swan and other Winners” will be the soundtrack from the movie Black Swan for which Natalie Portman won an Oscar in 2011, Jupiter Borealis by composer Heather Schmidt – who has been nominated for a Juno award, and the infamous soundtrack for the movie Star Wars for which John Williams won his first Oscar.

Treviño, a Senior at TAMIU, began her music studies in the sixth grade under the instruction of Beatrice Balli at Lamar Middle School. She continued her musical studies inhigh school with the J.W. Nixon Orchestra and the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts.

In Fall 2008, she enrolled at TAMIU where she entered the studio of Dr. Yu-Mei Huang.

Over the course of four years she has completed a number of works including concertos by Mozart and Bruch and sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms. She received second place in the Fine Arts division for the 2nd Annual Lamar Bruni Vergara Academic Conference for her performance of Mozart’s third violin concerto.

Treviño has been a member of numerous performing ensembles within the community. She is an active member of the Chamber Orchestra of Laredo, in which she currently serves asconcertmaster and has been performing with the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra for four years. She is also a founding member of the Stringendo StringQuintet, a local group dedicated to performing at various events in the area.

As an aspiring music educator, Treviño spends her spare time volunteering with the Laredo Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and local middle and high school orchestras. She has been an active member of the Association of Collegiate Music Educators at TAMIU since Fall2008, where she served as secretary in the 2009-2010 schoolyear and president in the 2010-2011 school year.

She has held a violin teaching position at La-Re-Do Music Academy since its opening in 2009.
