TAMIU HR Gets THEHRA Innovation Award

Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Office of Human Resources will be recognized with the first Annual Innovation Award in Human Resources Practices from the Texas Higher Education Human Resources Association (THEHRA) at its summer Conference in Corpus Christi this June.

THEHRA’s main mission is working with its members to enhance the field of human resources in higher education and to maximize their largest assets: human resources.

This year, THEHRA’s membership approved the awarding of its first Annual Innovation Award to improve the quality of programs and services on their own campuses through effective human resource administration practices. All 34 state colleges and universities and its human resources professionals were eligible to nominate an individual or team for this Award.
 TAMIU’s Award is for its development of the “Separation Technology Program, ” a solution to data and security protection for separating employees. Sandra Peña, TAMIU director of human resources, will receive the Award.

Peña said the Award reflects the University’s collaborative approach to finding a technology solution.

“With the advantage of today’s technology and automation also comes the issue of security and protection of information systems and data,” Peña said, “This issue is common to all employers when an employee separates. We worked in a true collaboration with the University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT). Working together, we developed an integrated software and process-based solution. We are greatly appreciative of this Award and proud that it recognizes the visionary efforts of our entire TAMIU team,” she said.
 In addition to the Award, TAMIU will receive a $500 donation to the University made possible by VALIC, a leading retirement plan provider for K-12 schools and school districts, higher education, not-for-profit healthcare and governmental institutions. The donation is to be used exclusively for future human resources professional development.

Founded in 1975, THEHRA has a potential membership of more than 500 human resource professionals from over 34 colleges and universities across Texas. The Association’s mission is to contribute to the professional advancement of human resources administration in State-supported senior colleges and universities in Texas.
