TAMIU Killam Library Expands Services This Fall

Get the satisfaction of indulging in a new book, listening to those artifacts known as CDs or watching a favorite movie without spending a fortune.

This Fall, you can visit the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library and lose yourself among floors full of stacks of books, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes and magazines and thousands of items available online or the more than 150,000 ebooks accessible at the Killam Library.

Patrons can search the Library’s collection, including thousands of library collections from around the world using WorldCat Local available at http://library.tamiu.edu

Among the items available via WorldCat:

  • More than 150,000 ebooks.
  • DVD, CD and VHS tape titles.
  • Brill Encyclopedia of the Ancient World.
  • National Geographic Magazine Historical Archive (1888 – 1994).
  • Annual reports and historical archives.
  • Encyclopedia of Associations (local, regional, state, national and international).
  • Cabell’s Directories of Publishing Opportunities.
  • Cambridge Journals Online.
  • CARMA Video and Webcast Library (Center for the Advancement of Research Methods and Analysis).
  • Gale Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media.

Visitors who need a comprehensive guide to government sources, including a section on the U.S./Mexico border can use a Web-based library research guide tamiu.libguides.com/govdocs Additional library research guides, Libguides, will continue to be published in many disciplines.

The Killam Library also provides access to streaming videos. The recently acquired Nursing Digital Library provides access to more than 120 hours of educational videos. Classical Music in Video is a database of 601 performances. Including other various disciplines, the streaming service includes access to more than 8,000 educational videos.

Those looking for a quiet place to study with a group may reserve any of the 24 available study rooms up to one day in advance or by walk up for two-hour periods with one renewal time period. Now available is a multimedia room which students can use to connect their laptops and work on group presentations.

Of historic interest to Library users is the developing South Texas Jewish Heritage Collection and availability of Heritage Quest Online (ProQuest). Heritage Quest combines digital, searchable images from the 1790 - 1930 U.S. federal census records with the digitized version of the UMI Genealogy & Local History collection.

Library services are available free of charge to University students, faculty and staff, and patrons of TexShare institutions and local educators.

TAMIU provides educator courtesy cards to Laredo Independent School District and United I.S.D. teachers, nurses, counselors and administrators that entitles them to circulation privileges free of charge.

TexShare cardholders can also use their cards at the Killam Library and use the Library services reserved for TAMIU students, faculty, staff and educator courtesy card holders.

The Laredo Public Library is a member of TexShare, a statewide consortium of academic and public libraries. Contact your local library for more information on how to obtain a TexShare card.

Visitors who do not qualify for free services may purchase a community library member card. They must be 18 years or older, demonstrate local residency, fill out an application form and pay $25 for a membership card good for one year. Community library member cardholders are entitled to circulation privileges.

The Fall Semester begins Thursday, Aug. 23 at TAMIU. Late registration will continue through Aug. 29.
