U.S. Army Captain Samuel B. Cantrell, a 2008 Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) graduate, continues to make TAMIU proud by being awarded the Bronze Star Medal in Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan (OEF-A).

“I would like to thank all my instructors and professors at TAMIU and the ROTC program for guiding and molding me for success. They truly made a lasting impact and I am grateful for their contributions,” Captain Cantrell said.

In June of 2011, Cpt. Cantrell deployed to the Kandahar Province in Afghanistan as part of OEF-A. On May 2012, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his non-commissioned officers’ and soldiers’ efforts in providing force protection for approximately 38,000 U.S. and Coalition Forces within the southern regions of Afghanistan.

Receiving his commission through the TAMIU Army ROTC program, Captain Cantrell made history in 2003 as the first TAMIU student to receive a four-year Army ROTC Scholarship since the program was first disbanded 30 years prior.

Cpt. Cantrell graduated from TAMIU in 2008 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army on May 9 that same year.

He is currently stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma with the U.S. Army’s Second Battalion, Fourth Field Artillery Regiment. He currently has no plans to leave his service in the U.S. Army and is expected to take a Captains Career Course in November.
