A Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) employee, Christy L. Martínez, payroll specialist, has earned designation as a Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) after successfully passing a rigorous exam.

Martínez joins an elite group of more than 10,000 CPP professionals who bring a high level of experience and knowledge to strategic payroll management to better facilitate overall goals.

During the spring, a visit from Texas A&M University’s Danny Grimes, associate director of payroll services, provided the catalyst that would encourage Martínez' path to the CPP. During a discussion about the toughest issues of TAMIU’s Office of Budget, Payroll, and Fiscal Analysis, Grimes recommended that an employee take charge and acquire a CPP certification.

Martínez took up the challenge, studying “The Payroll Source” for 4 months and taking a one-week long course recommended by the American Payroll Association (APA). A four-hour exam followed online.

The day of the exam, Martínez recalled her stress and a knot in her stomach.

“Before I knew it, I had 20 seconds left to finish my 4-hour exam and I had to hit submit. Not even knowing the result would appear on my screen upon submission, I suddenly read ‘Result: Pass,’ " she recalled.

Now that she's joined the CPP ranks, Martínez is considering her next career goal.

"This event presented itself in an opportune time and I have been happy to help develop the efficiency of my Office as well as increase the knowledge to remain within tax compliance," she noted.
