TAMIU Math Professor Awarded NSF Grant

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $159,357 to a Texas A&M International University mathematician to fund research and encourage TAMIU students to study science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM disciplines.

Principal investigator, Dr. Runchang Lin, associate professor of mathematics, received the grant to support his research, “Investigation of Discontinuous Galerkin Least-Squares Finite Element Methods for Singularly Perturbed Problems.”

About the research, Dr. Lin wrote, “This research is the essential step for an efficient adaptive strategy for solving complex problems. Focusing on rigorous theoretical analysis and computational implementations, this project will lead to reliable numerical methods for solving complex problems, which can then be applied to fluid dynamics, electromagnetism, chemotaxis, biology, and more.”

He added the grant will help pay for both undergraduate and graduate students assistants to help him on the project.

Lin said he expects to share his results with colleagues around the world, thus encouraging international cooperation.
