Students Write Fears Away at TAMIU Writing Field Day Wednesday

Just in time for Halloween, Texas A&M International University’s 2012 Writing Field Day is going to the circus. The event will be held Wednesday, October 24 at TAMIU’s Lamar Bruni Vergara Memorial Garden from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students will join in fun, popcorn, and a few ghost stories.

Almost a dozen activities will be featured at Writing Field Day and are designed to expand writing ability.

For example, a game inspired by the “Like a Sir” image macro, “How NOT to Write Like a Sir,” focuses on teaching students the importance of reducing wordiness. “Believe it or Not” is inspired by Ripley’s Believe it or Not and elaborates on the credibility of secondary sources. Like an effort at divination, “Discover your Higher Self” provides an opportunity for students to write and reflect. Writing Field Day will feature eight other activities in the same vein.

In addition to games, Writing Field Day includes a slam poetry presentation from the Laredo Border Slam. Laredo Border Slam is Laredo’s first and only poetry slam group. Poetry slam is the competitive art of poetry that encourages a focus on what a poet is saying and how they are saying it.

Students will have the opportunity to participate as much as they want and earn tickets that can be redeemed for various prizes such as coffee mugs, T-shirts, and gift certificates.
