The Thanksgiving season began early for Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students with the announcement of a $50,000 gift supporting TAMIU’s Harvard Latino Leadership Initiative (LLI).

Eduardo A. Garza Robles, Uni-Trade CEO, presented the gift at a reception for students and visiting Harvard representatives at Casa Ortiz this week.

Program representatives Dr. Andy Zelleke, senior lecturer of Business Administration at Harvard, and Dario Collado, LLI program manager, attended the reception.

The Latino Leadership Initiative (LLI) was developed by the Center for Public Leadership (CPL) at the Harvard Kennedy School to support the rising generation of Latino leaders. The LLI at TAMIU is now in its third year of offering.  TAMIU is one of only seven national universities selected to participate.

After a competitive application process, Harvard program representatives select TAMIU students for the one-week summer program held at the Cambridge, MA campus.  Students join classroom sessions on negotiation, organizing, public narrative, emotional intelligence, and public speaking. They meet with recognized Latino members of government, nonprofit and business sectors.

Participants continue their leadership development through regular teleconferences and all LLI campuses design a community service project to be implemented in collaboration with faculty and administration at their home campuses and local communities.
