Laredo Theatre Guild International (LTGI) will host auditions for its revival of Steel Magnolias  Friday, Nov. 9 from 7 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 10 from 2 to 6 p.m.at Texas A&M International University’s Sam Johnson Experimental Theatre in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts.

Steel Magnolias will be performed at TAMIU in a seven-day production Jan. 16 – 20, 2013.

The comedic drama by Robert Harling, with an all-female adult cast of varying ages, is about a group of southern women who share friendship, conflicts, and other life experiences while visiting their local beauty parlor. The main storyline involves a young character’s illness and the humorous and poignant relationships that link six women.

In addition to multiple stage revivals, Steel Magnolias was a hit 1989 film that starred Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, and Dolly Parton.

The LTGI production will be directed by Vernon Carroll.  A special half-priced ticket preview is Tuesday evening, Jan. 15, 2013. Regular performances will follow Jan. 16 through Jan. 20.  All performances will be in TAMIU’s Sam Johnson Experimental Theatre, a 100-seat intimate theater venue allowing audiences to be “up close and personal” with the actors.

The cast of six women ranges in ages from mid-to-late teens through mid-50’s and 60’s. Though casting is for women only, it is not race-specific, because, as the title suggests, the “female characters are as delicate as magnolias, but as tough as steel.”

Other shows planned for LTGI’s fourth season include Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in Feb. 2013, and the musical Hairspray in July.
