Bulerias Workshop This Weekend at TAMIU

A special three-day workshop on bulerías, one of flamenco’s most flexible dance forms will be held at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 4,5 and 6.

Timo Lozano, considered the “King of Bulerías,” will conduct the workshop.  An international master teacher, he has performed with the companies of José Greco, María Rosa, Carmen Moro, Matilde Coral and Rafael de Cordoba and is a much sought-after international Master Teacher who has conducted workshops in Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Canada, Israel Brazil and the U.S.  He is the founder and artistic director of the Flamenco Dance Ensemble, Mosaico in Kiryat Gat, Israel.

The workshop will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4 and focus on Flamenco Cajon.  Saturday will feature technique from 10 a.m. to noon followed by lunch.  Repertoire: Bulerías, will follow from  1:30 – 5 p.m.  On Sunday, Jan. 6, students will complete the repertoire from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.  For more information and registration, please contact Bede Leyendecker at bleyendecker@tamiu.edu / 956-326-2649

Bulerías has long been associated with Spanish city of Jerez de la Frontera, home of many of flamenco's most influential artists. Rooted in the soleares, the bulerías includes aspects of other flamenco forms including jaleos and bamberas. “Bulerías" comes from the word "burlar," meaning to mock, outwit, or escape danger.
