The remarkable artistry and physical power of contemporary dance will be on display Friday at Texas A&M International University as the Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) performs its Beyond Borders at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts' Theatre.

The DBDT  has performed for 3 million art patrons and 2 million students over five continents. For this past week at TAMIU, DBDT members have hosted master classes, two school performances and a surprise "flash mob" performance at TAMIU's Student Center.

Friday's performance of Beyond Borders will feature exciting works from DBDT’s Dallas Season including  “Beams from Heaven”
by Christopher L. Huggins. It is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1976 by Ann Williams, art director, DBDT's mission is to create and produce contemporary modern dance at its highest level of artistic excellence. They are celebrating their 36th season as the oldest, continuously operating professional dance company in Dallas.

DBDT were invited to perform at the  2012 Cultural Olympiad in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Bede Leyendecker, TAMIU chair of the department of fine and performing arts, said the DBDT’s appearance here is a remarkable community opportunity.

“This is such an amazing opportunity for the dancers in our community and students, in addition to the community at large. The DBDT are a powerful force in dance today.  Come and be amazed,” Leyendecker said.

Funding support was  provided by the Fernando A. Salinas Charitable Trust and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
