Something different, something new, unique and yet classical is what you’ll find at the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra’s Concert Sunday, March 24 at 3 p.m. at Laredo Community College’s Guadalupe & Lilia Martínez Fine Arts Center.

The Laredo Phil will be performing the world premiere of a concerto written by cellist Patrick Laird of the famed group Break of Reality. Tickets are on sale via web or phone reservations and will also be available at the door. For more information, call 956.326.3042 or visit www.laredophil.com.

In 2012 Break of Reality performed at Texas A&M International University’s Center for the Fine & Performing Arts. At that time, Brendan Townsend, Laredo Phil music director and TAMIU assistant professor, encouraged the band to consider writing a piece for the group and orchestra.

After spending some time on a compositional retreat, cellist and composer Patrick Laird – who writes much of the music for Break of Reality – let Townsend know that he had a draft of the concerto ready. A short while later, the pair had arranged a date for the group to play with the Laredo Phil.

“A world premiere is always an exciting time for an orchestra,” said maestro Townsend, “But this is really unique! A concerto for three cellos, percussion and orchestra, written and performed by a group known for their Heavy Cello Thunder Rock? Now that is special!”

Break of Reality brings together three cellists and percussionists who combine and incorporate individual styles to come up with a unique group sound that has been exciting audiences across the country.

“…Their songs go from 0 to 60 in a split-second, turning on a dime to take you from a quiet chamber recital to a thundering arena rock concert: Fans of both Nine Inch Nails and Kronos Quartet will be please,” the New York Press says.

Since the start of their career in 2003, Break of Reality has moved listeners, helped provide a link between audiences of all ages and encouraged diversity. Break of Reality has moved its listeners, both in live concert and via the internet. Through their affiliation with Pandora Radio and iTunes, their music has been streamed millions of times and they have sold over 40,000 albums.
