Dallas Black Dance Theatre Coming to TAMIU March 22

In its over 35-year history, Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) has performed for 3 million art patrons and 2 million students over five continents. Now DBDT comes to Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre Friday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m to perform Beyond Borders.

Beyond Borders will feature exciting works from DBDT’s Dallas Season and feature “Beams from Heaven” by Christopher L. Huggins. The performance is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1976 by Ann Williams, art director, the mission of DBDT is to create and produce contemporary modern dance at its highest level of artistic excellence. They currently celebrate their 36th season as the oldest, continuously operating professional dance company in Dallas.

DBDT’s most recent accomplishment was being invited to the 2012 Cultural Olympiad in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Ann Williams, founder and artistic director, said, “It has been our goal and mission to create and produce contemporary modern dance at its highest level of artistic excellence through performances and educational programs that bridge cultures and reach diverse communities.”

Bede Leyendecker, TAMIU chair of the department of fine and performing arts, said the DBDT’s appearance at TAMIU is a remarkable community opportunity.

“This is such an amazing opportunity for the dancers in our community and students, in addition to the community at large. The DBDT are a powerful force in dance today. While they are here they will host two school performances and master classes with our students,” Leyendecker said.
