In their first national competition, the members of the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Cheerleading Squad placed second in their Division at the NCA College National Championship finals Friday morning in Daytona Beach, FL.

TAMIU lost first place to the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond in the Intermediate All-Girl II Division.

Elizabeth Torres, an outreach and retention specialist for the University, who sponsors the squad, said all were ecstatic with their historic results.

“The girls did an absolutely amazing job and we have had a very rewarding experience here in our first competition.  UCO has a huge reputation for being a powerhouse cheer group, and we came really close.  We managed to beat everyone in our Conference and had several other universities providing us with positive comments.  We’ve really come from nothing to something in such a short time and the girls have worked so very hard.   We are very proud of our effort to represent TAMIU and Laredo,” Torres said by cell phone shortly after the competition ended.

In Thursday’s competition, TAMIU finished first in the Division to advance to Friday’s final, a historic first for the University.

In addition to UCO, the 20-member TAMIU squad competed against Dallas Baptist University, Brenau University, Ocean County College, Bridgewater State University and Lenoir-Rhyme University.

This is the first time the University and its squad has participated at this competition.
